First Pandavas went Varanasi, but Bhagwan Shiv wanted to avoid them and took the form of a bull ( Nandi ) and hid in the Garhwal region.

In search of lord Shiva, Pandavas went to Garhwal Himalayas where Bhima saw a bull grazing near Guptkashi and immediately recognized the bull to be Bhagwan Shiva. When Bhima caught the tail and hind leg of the bull, the bull-formed Bhagwan Shiva immediately disappeared into the ground to later reappear in parts.
